Friday, July 19, 2013 by Douglas And Gordon
We hope you’ve been taking advantage of the gorgeous summer weather this week! Whether you want to spend the weekend basking outdoors, or hiding away from the sun, we here at D&G have you covered! (No pun intended)
The London Folkfest is back for its third year, taking place at The Bedford in Balham. The festival, which began yesterday, features over 30 musical acts performing across 3 stages. The Folkfest will run until Sunday, so there’s still time to get your tickets. Covering the genres of traditional and modern folk, acoustic and roots music, the festival line-up will include The Hummingbirds, Ryan Keen, Matthew and The Atlas, Leddra Chapman and Laurence Fox, to name but a few.
Battersea Arts Centre
The Battersea Arts Centre will be hosting a preview of just a few of the shows that will be making an appearance at the Edinburgh Festival, happening early next month. “The Islanders”, “The Reunion” and “Moon Rock Boombox” make up tonight’s line-up at the centre. For an evening of comedy and drama, do go along and support the performers, particularly if you won’t be going to the festival.
Get Active Wandsworth Festival 2013
Following on from their Get Active day last Saturday, Get Active will now be hosting an open weekend at various venues around Wandsworth. Among the scheduled activities are a female bootcamp at Clapham Common; a chance to test out your rowing skills at Barn Elms Boathouse; beach volleyball and archery tasters at Barn Elms Sports Centre; non-contact rugby play sessions at Wandsworth Common; zumba, football and streetdancing tasters at Battersea Sports Centre; family swimming and children’s activities at the Balham Leisure Centre; and gym sessions at both Roehampton Sports & Fitness Centre and Latchmere Leisure Centre. Sunday, meanwhile, will consist of a 5km run along the river Wandle to the Thames; a tennis tournament at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park; an outdoor fitness class on Wandsworth Common; children’s athletics coaching and gym programmes at Tooting Athletics Track; and gym tasters and children’s activities at both the Putney and Tooting Leisure Centres. For a weekend of exercise and family fun, do take part in the events, most of which are for free. A full programme with times can be found here.
“A Touch of Art”, an exhibition of artwork created by visually-impaired people, opened on Wednesday at the Balham Library. The works can be enjoyed by through both touch and sight, and can be viewed from 10am to 6pm on Saturday.
George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will be performing at the Clapham Grand tonight, 7pm. According to the website, the show will consist of an “…extravaganza of musicians, dancers, singers, roller girls, circus clowns and “galactic space travellers”…”. If you’re searching for an eclectic, entertaining musical experience, then look no further!
Battersea Flower Station
The Battersea Flower Station will be hosting a summer party this Sunday from 11am to 4pm. There will be Pimms, popcorn, music, flower crowns and much more! They request that you bring along your family, friends, and the sunshine – so do go along for what is set to be a lovely afternoon.
