Top Tips to Keep Spiders Out of Your Home!

Summer is coming to an end so you might start to see more spiders popping up around your home. Spiders do not just head inside to get cosy for the autumn, they are reaching full maturity and looking for a quiet corner to meet a mate. So don’t feel bad, someone living in your home might be getting set up this mating season.

However, it is completely understandable if arachnids are not your thing, a lot of people would be on your side. While not all spiders bite, they leave cobwebs everywhere, and of course, there is always the terrible possibility that one ends up in a shoe before you put it on, or in your bed before you go to sleep. In either scenario, you will need some time to recover from the trauma. To prevent this, we have put together a list so you can keep the spiders out!

Citrus

Spiders do not like citrus. While some scientists might say that there is no ‘proven evidence’ that this is a real method to prevent spiders, the internet overwhelmingly disagrees. Either way, it is worth a try because it will cost you next to nothing, and you will be eating some tasty fruit while you are at it. Grab the peel of a lemon or a lime and rub it along windowsills, door frames, cracks, or pretty much anywhere you might think a spider would make its way inside. To make the process easier, you can also mix the juice into a spray bottle with a little bit of water and spray it in the same areas.

Close the cracks

This one is a bit more tedious, but if you really want to cover your bases, go down to the DIY store and grab a couple tubes of sealant. Use it to fill in any cracks in the floor, baseboards, corners, windowsills, or even in the ceiling! If it is more difficult to get in, spiders are likely to move on to somewhere else and you will prevent an initial invasion. This method might be the most work, but it is also the most effective way to keep spiders out.

Tidy up

Even though it may feel like the moment we see a spider they are destined to attack us, they prefer dark and quiet corners where they are left unbothered. Clutter can be an ideal place for a spider to set up shop. Since spiders do not really eat food and crumbs left sitting around, they enter homes searching for a place to put up their webs. Therefore, if you keep your home tidy you are less likely to see a spider when you open that dodgy cupboard door or dig through a pile of bags in the garage.

Conkers

While this may not be scientifically proven like citrus, there’s an old wife’s tale that placing conkers along windowsills and in the corners of room will keep spiders away. Why? We cannot really say, but this one people swear by, and its cost-effective trick, so it is worth a shot!

Spider Catcher

We know this is not exactly a way to prevent spiders coming into your home, but it is useful to have around when you see one. You will avoid killing the spiders and keeping spiders alive is helpful when trying to keep other insects out of your home. Also, when you get rid of spiders you take away the opportunity for them to mate and nest which will prevent more!
