Clapham South Area Guide
Property in Clapham Southside
Clapham has always been a popular place to live. Through the 18th and early 19th centuries, Clapham property was favoured by the upper classes, with many large houses and villas built around Clapham Common and in the Old Town in a bid for Londoners to have country style living close to the city centre. Samuel Pepys spent the last two years living in a Clapham property, and in the early 19th century anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce called the area home.
The green open spaces of Clapham Common and the area’s convenient transport links make Clapham Southside a wonderful place to live. When looking for London apartments or houses for sale in Clapham Southside, you’ll find properties in the area have something to offer everybody – for families, there are larger houses with generous gardens, close to excellent schools and nurseries, while any young professional can find an excellent purpose-built or conversion flat for sale in Clapham, surrounded by the fantastic local nightlife.
Clapham boasts two Tube stations, and is ideal for busy professionals who need a peaceful living environment as a retreat from the fast working pace of the city. Alastair Summerfield, our innovative Clapham estate agent, works with a lot of families looking for “urban village” living among the terraced Victorian properties and large gardens on offer in Clapham Southside.
Alastair also emphasizes the appeal of property in Abbeville Village; with its niche boutiques, restaurants, bars, summer fete and farmers’ market, it offers locals a sense of community, as well as proximity to Clapham Common. Property for sale in Clapham is particularly popular throughout the Abbeville area.
Property to Rent in Clapham Southside
Charlie Jones, Douglas & Gordon’s lettings manager and chief letting agent for Clapham Southside, says that people looking for property to rent in Clapham tend to favour family houses. “Most of our stock consists of large Victorian four and five-bedroom houses, which are let for £800-900 per week” says Charlie. “We have fewer flats for rent but a two-bedroom flat would go for £375 per week.”
Rental prices in Clapham have increased, but not as much as those in other areas. Charlie says she has noticed a rise in letting requests from France in the Clapham Southside area. There are several factors that make a house for rent in Clapham an attractive prospect for these families. These include the local French schools, the Common, the village feel enjoyed when renting Clapham property in the Abbeville area, and the good transport links.
While Charlie’s client base consists primarily of families, there are also a few young professionals who find a flat for rent in Clapham Southside places them conveniently close to Tube routes into the city.
